Skincare is deeply personal, yet for many, the journey to find the right routine feels anything but. With countless products promising flawless results, people are often left overwhelmed, unsure where to start or how to choose the right solutions for their unique needs. Many people face similar struggles—unclear guidance, routines that don’t adapt to life’s changes, and a lack of personalized insights to navigate their skincare challenges. These gaps not only frustrate users but also reveal deeper issues within the skincare industry: a reliance on one-size-fits-all solutions that fail to address the diverse and evolving needs of individuals.

I reviewed a variety of literature and online publications in order to better understand the problem space and identify current gaps in technology. I scoured online communities, forums, and social media to collect some initial data (in the form of comments, discussions, etc.) from representative users.

To better understand the underlying factors that affect their skincare experiences, I conducted 1-on-1 interviews with 3 users. This allowed them to share their stories and emotions freely leading to four key takeaways.

Consistency is a challenge
Many users struggle to stick to a routine, often due to lack of motivation, time, or visible short-term results. \Choosing the right product
Users often lack knowledge about active ingredients and how they address specific concerns, or which ingredients to avoid for sensitivities or allergies. Breakouts can discourage users from trying new products.Skincare needs change
Factors like seasons, travelling, menstruation, diet, stress, and age, requiring dynamic updates to recommendations.Trust is crucial in skincare
Users need to feel confident in the app's suggestions, they may struggle to distinguish marketing hype from genuine benefits.Information Overload
